Tikal (known in ancient glyphs as Yax Mutul) is one of the largest and most powerful cities of the ancient Maya civilization, located in the jungle of the department of Petén, Guatemala.

In 1979, UNESCO declared Tikal National Park a Mixed Heritage (cultural and natural) of Humanity, being one of the first sites on the planet to receive this double recognition.
